Rheintaler Höhenweg
Description
From Berneck, the tour starts on the country road to Au and up towards Walzenhausen. At the first left-hand serpentine, follow the single trail that branches off along the Rheintaler Höhenweg. This leads below the village of Walzenhausen, alternating between forest paths and single trails to Rheineck and Thal. Climb up the country road to Wolfhalden, where you take a singletrail parallel to the Klusbach stream to Schönenbüel just before the village. You reach Oberegg on country roads and ride via Ebenau to St. Anton, the highest point of the tour. An excellent single trail takes you along the top of the mountain and over Halegg to Balgach. You return to the starting point via Buechholz and through the vineyards south of Berneck.

I rode this trail today, June 28, 2026. It really is a beautiful ride! Unfortunately, the descent at the very end is blocked by the farmer’s numerous cattle fences. As the previous commenter mentioned, I can only confirm that there are still plenty of other small trails to explore.
Quite a nice tour; the first part of the descent to St. Anton is also included in another tour here. If you keep an eye out for it on the map app, you can easily find one or two great trails.
Cool
I was very pleasantly surprised by this tour. The small singletrail sections on the Rheintaler on the Rheintaler Höhenweg are fun. The ascent next to the Klusbach is entertaining and the scenery is great. The Rütegg inn just before St. Anton is definitely more rustic than the pub in St. Anton, which can be reached by car. The long singletrail to Balgach is brilliant and fun for non-professionals and wannabes alike. As always in Appenzell, the tour leads through a few bans, but fortunately there were no conflicts with non-bikers.
