Hoher Kasten
Description
From the village of Rüthi, you climb up through the village and follow a paved mountain road up to the Inneralp and over the ridge to the Kastensattel. From here, you follow a very steep and sloping path up to the summit of the Hoher Kasten. The bike has to be carried here and if you have a lock with you, it is best to leave it at the Kastensattel. From the saddle, you follow a technically challenging trail to Alp Ruhsitz, where a wonderfully flowing single trail to the Resspass begins. Follow the trail to Montlinger Schwamm and continue on a more challenging trail to Strüssler. This leads via Stein to the road from Rüthi to Kobelwald, which you follow back to the starting point.
Alternative: Descent from Alp Stofel to Rüthi

Awesome ride—the trails offer a little bit of everything. The section with the tough hairpin turns—starting at about 700 meters above sea level, first across a meadow, then through the woods—is very overgrown with thorns and stinging nettles in the upper part. It looks like it’s hardly ever used. In my opinion, it’s not worth it right now.
Worthwhile alternatives:
Ascent from Appenzell (e.g. Hirschberg station) via Eggerstanden or Ruhsitz.
Instead of the difficult descent from Kastensattel, carry your bike up to Kamor for about 5 minutes from km 12.6. Enjoy the fantastic view and then descend a little easier, first along the ridge, then always along the hiking trail to "Zapfen" (1286 m.a.s.l.). Between 1485 and 1431 m.a.s.l. I would take the road.
Thanks MTB Rheintal for the great trail from Montlinger Schwamm!
Great tour with a comfortable ascent.
The hairpin bends below the Kastensattel are more likely to be rated 4.99 out of 6 in terms of difficulty due to the wooden and metal steps. For the rest, the rating fits...
The early bird strategy (8.30 a.m. summit) proved its worth on Sundays. The number of hikers was still manageable...
There are some great creative solutions (thanks MTB Rheintal) to overcome the numerous pasture fences...
The first half of the ascent is a little boring, because you drive up in the forest on a tarred road. Then on the second half, the great views down and as far as Lake Constance make up for it.
The first trail down is very tough, then it gets easier. All in all, finally a proper MTB tour worthy of the name - thank you for that!
Beautiful bike tour - long ascent with around 1200 m in one go. Great trails that ride down into the valley. Small disadvantage - there is always a fence or a crossroads where you have to heave your bike over.
It is advantageous to ride the tour during the week or, like us, on an early evening. Otherwise you can expect a lot of hikers from Kastensattel to Ruhsitz.
Free parking available at Rüthi train station.
