Allos Superkombi

Autapie (Val d'Allos)

Val d'Allos offers two exceptional trail highlights—the Baisse de Prenier and the Autapie—both of which are incorporated into this route. The result is a tour that belongs on everyone's bucket list.

Description

The climb from Colmars via Allos to the Col d'Allos follows the little-traveled main road due to a lack of alternatives. Immediately after the pass summit, turn right and ride a bit further up a well-rideable singletrack to the Baisse de Prenier. The scenery here is truly impressive; the pass lies right at the entrance to the Mercantour National Park.

At the Baisse de Prenier, the S2-level single-track descent to Allos begins. In the upper section, it winds smoothly and is well-maintained through the forest. Eventually, you reach a farm, from where the signposted route leads down the gravel road to Allos. However, there are frequent direct S3-level trails that allow you to replace the gravel descent with singletrack. The descent thus ends right on the outskirts of Allos.

Now the second part of the tour begins on the other side of the valley. You ride up to the valley station of the chairlift. If you’re out and about in July and August, take the chairlift to help with the ascent. Outside of operating hours, you’ll tackle the 350-meter elevation gain on a gravel road. After the chairlift’s mountain station, the climb becomes treacherously steep. A gravel road does lead all the way up to the Autapie, but it can only be reasonably tackled with an e-mountain bike. This adds up to 500 meters of elevation gain.

From the summit, the view opens up over the entire Val d’Allos and the slightly lower-lying Verdon region. The trail along the ridge—which forms the first part of the descent—is also clearly visible. Later, you turn left into the forest, where a superb trail rated S2 in difficulty awaits. After passing the Cabane de l’Autapie (unmanned), you ride a few meters along a gravel road to the next trail. This is the highlight. Rated S1, it rides through the steepest terrain, and you can’t help but wonder, “Who on earth builds a trail like this?” The trail leads in a truly impressive manner all the way to the first houses in Colmars.

Verdict on the tour: How awesome was that?
