Alpe Ganatsch
Description
The practical base of the tour is the Schnann highway rest stop, just east of St. Anton. Immediately after the rest stop, the gravel road climbs up to Alpe Ganatsch. This is the way to overcome the 750 meters in altitude. The hosted Alpe Ganatsch is a good place for refreshments.
The descent rides along the trail that begins just below the Alpe. Fast, tricky, agile, varied: this is how the trail descends through the sometimes steep forest terrain. The steepest terrain is in the lowest segment. The level of the descent is S2, sometimes even S3. The trail leads down to the valley floor, where you ride back to Schnann on the country road.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

I’d generally rate the trail above as S2. The upper two-thirds, in particular, are very flowy. The surface is nice, root-covered forest soil where everything is rideable. In the upper section, there are some gentle hairpin turns—perfect for practicing shifting your weight to the rear wheel. In the lower third, these hairpin turns become more frequent. Except for about four of them, however, they’re easy to handle and not too challenging. If you can’t shift your weight to the rear wheel at all, you’ll probably have to get off your bike here quite often. Some caution is advised at the exposed section. This is rated S3 and has some nasty rocks that you can’t see as you approach.
I rode the tour on 04.11.2024.
The terrain at the top is an S2 for me and as it says in the text it is an S3 at the bottom and the last part consists of
hairpin bends with rear wheel offset and very steep. I wouldn't ride the last part again!!!
A great short tour that I can recommend with the addition that next time I'll skip the bottom section.
