Arpelistock
Description
The tour starts on the Col du Sanetsch, which can be reached by post bus. The route to the summit leads over the prominent mountain ridge in a mix of pushing, carrying and riding in sections. From an altitude of around 2800 meters above sea level, the bike is permanently on your shoulders until you reach the summit (3036 meters above sea level). The last few meters in particular are high alpine and require good surefootedness. The summit with its view of the Diablerets glaciers and, above all, the Valais Alps including Mont Blanc is fantastic. The descent that follows is initially very technical, with a few meters of walking required, but then the trail becomes really fun and leads through the barren scree landscape. The later ride over the ridge down to the Col de Sanetsch is a highlight. You then head down to Grand-Zour on fast freight roads and winding single trails and reach the road to the Col de Sanetsch. From here, it's all about fun in the bisses. The route leads along almost flat water channels over to the Daillon region, where you finally have to take a shot into the Morge gorge. Along the river, you reach Conthey and roll south of the airfield back to Sion.
Tip: There is also the option of pedaling up towards the Col du Sanetsch under your own steam the evening before and staying overnight at the attractively located Hotel du Sanetsch.

We were on the Arpelistock yesterday (29.09.2019) after spending the night at the Hotel du Sanetsch. The ascent up to around 2700 m.a.s.l. is possible without any problems, then it becomes high alpine. From 2900 m.a.s.l. it is worth leaving the bike behind, the ascent to the summit is practically impossible and not worthwhile with the bike on your shoulders from our point of view, as it is not really rideable. The descent to Glarey is super beautiful, then rather boring and unspectacular to Sion.
