La Mortice
Description
The tour begins in the Ubaye valley near La Grande Serenne. Immediately after the start at the bar, the cranks stop turning after about 150 meters on asphalt and the bike has to be shouldered or pushed to reach the Col de Serenne. This passage may feel endless, but is rewarded with breathtaking views and scenic beauty. Passing the Lac des 9 Couleurs, the route continues across a moon-like landscape to the summit of La Mortice Sommet Sud. It is possible to tackle both peaks, as they are similar in terms of difficulty.
At the summit of La Mortice Sommet Sud, there is a spectacular view over the Ubaye Valley and the French Maritime Alps. The panorama is so impressive that you should plan enough time at the summit to fully enjoy the view. A short stay would simply be too short for this beauty. In late summer or autumn in particular, the scenery is complemented by an impressive play of colors.
The descent is also a highlight and offers a range of difficulties from S1 to S3. Up to the Col de Serenne, 95% of the route is rideable. Some passages require a little more skill, but overall the descent is a real pleasure with the right hairpin bend technique, good concentration and bike control. Towards the Ubaye valley, the route becomes somewhat easier. Above the mountain pastures at an altitude of around 2200 meters, turn right and follow the old Mulattiera trail, past Haut Coulet and Bas Coulet, back to the starting point. If the bar is still open on arrival, you can end the day there with a coffee or another treat.
