Leiterspitz Sarntal
Description
The tour starts in Astfeld in the Sarntal valley, initially following the paved road toward Durnholz. Soon, however, the route branches off to the left and leads up a narrow mountain road to the Gentersberg Alm. While the surface is still paved at the start, it quickly turns to gravel as you enter the dense forest. This section covers almost exactly 1,000 meters of elevation gain.
The final stretch up to the summit of the Leiterspitz requires a push. Those who shy away from this effort can leave their mountain bike at the alpine pasture and climb to the rewarding viewpoint on foot. By the time you reach the summit, however, you’ll regret not having carried your mountain bike up, as the descent promises pure trail fun.
The descent follows the ascent route and turns out to be a first-class, alpine S3 trail. The route is fun yet challenging; it offers plenty of flow but remains technically tricky at times, especially in the upper sections. From the Gentersberger Alm, the route then follows the ridge more or less directly downhill toward Astfeld. This forest trail is extremely varied and somewhat easier to ride than the more demanding summit section. The route finally leads directly into the village of Astfeld without any detours.
Note: The ascent via Radelsee is not recommended on a mountain bike because it still includes some isolated climbing sections.
