Timmelsjoch Südseite
Description
The start is in Moos in Passeier. If you wish, you can make the long asphalt uphill over the southern ramp to the national border at the Timmelsjoch easier with a shuttle service. However, if you want to conquer the 1700 meters of altitude difference under your own steam, you should start early or set off outside of peak travel times - the volume of traffic on the pass road should not be underestimated.
The ascent runs through impressive high mountain landscapes and along historically significant routes. The Timmelsjoch road was built under Mussolini during the Second World War - an impressive testimony to Alpine engineering. Once you reach the pass at 2474 meters above sea level, not only the open-air museum awaits you, but also the striking friendship eagle on the Austrian-Italian border. A stop at the Timmelsjoch rest stop is also a good idea.
The descent begins in a technically challenging manner. On old granite slabs and a historic mule track, you head towards Zollhaus on the E5 long-distance trail. The difficulty is S3, occasionally S4, interspersed with smoother S2 passages. A few pushy passages, especially in the area of the stone bridge, require additional stamina and technique. From the Zollhaus, there is a short transfer to the Hochfirstalm before continuing on the E5 towards the Unterglanegg-Alm. Here too, S2-S3 sections alternate with flowing sections before the trail turns into a cart path. Finally, a relaxed trail along the Passer river leads back into the valley - with a few final trail sections - until you reach the starting point again at the former bunker in Moos in Passeier (now the bunker museum).
