Monte Castello
Description
From the center of Rapallo, you can either take the mountain road up to the Passo della Crocetta (599 meters above sea level) and then follow the pilgrims' path past the Passo di Coreglia to the Montallegro church. Alternatively, you can easily take the historic cable car, which takes you to the top in just a few minutes.
The route starts behind the church on a wide, bumpy path to the Ristorante Il Pellegrino. After that, the path becomes increasingly narrow and varied. Sometimes flowing, sometimes rough, sometimes wide, sometimes narrow, sometimes easy, sometimes challenging - the path meanders steadily southwards along the ridge. At Monte Carmelo, there are a few uphill stretches of pushing, which are rewarded with a great trail on the back. It is also possible to bypass this section via an alternative trail on the east side.
After a short asphalt section, you reach the start of the final descent - a varied and super flowy trail, which also has the odd tricky section in between. You descend to the church of Maxena and then continue downhill on a trail through the picturesque olive groves. The last section of the trail leads over numerous steps, which you can alternatively cycle around on the parallel road.
Finally, you reach the coastal town of Chiavari. For the way back to Rapallo, it is advisable to take the train, as the return journey on the coastal road requires a few more meters in altitude. It is more pleasant to end the tour relaxing on the beach in Chiavari and then take the train back to your starting point.
