Levanto Supertrail

Levanto Supertrail

Levanto is one of the MTB hotspots between Genoa and La Spezia. One of the trail bangers leads directly down to the village and is the finissima of the trail combination tour.

Description

The tour begins spectacularly with the fantastic cycle path along the former railroad line directly on the shores of the Mediterranean. Through numerous tunnels and impressive rocky passages, you reach Bonassola. There you leave the coastal path and climb uphill on a small, asphalted road, reach the main road of Levanto and follow it further uphill. At an altitude of around 550 meters above sea level, a gravel road branches off to the left, which soon leads to the start of the first trail descent of the day. The S2 trail winds its way down through the forest and ends at a small road, which you follow to Costa. The next trail begins behind the group of houses.

This initial transfer trail includes a few short climbs, but then smoothly hugs the mountain flank. After the agriturismo, the trail turns into a varied singletrail descent, which is graded between S2 and S3. This great descent ends at a large ruined building - an unfinished block of flats in the middle of the forest, which is now a crumbling memorial. A little below the ruins, you finally reach the valley floor.

Now comes the second longer ascent of the day to Colle Guaitarola. First you climb up a larger road to Piazza, where a little later a small asphalt road branches off to the left. Bend after bend, this continues uphill, later turning into a gravel road and finally joining the main road at the top of the pass. Shortly after the pass, a transfer trail branches off to the left, which turns into a gravel road and later into a single trail - the Levanto Supertrail. This top descent rides smoothly and quickly towards the sea, and local mountain bikers have even incorporated individual jumps. The closer you get to the sea, the rockier the surface becomes, but it remains good and racy. Above Levanto, the trail winds downhill in several hairpin bends until you finally reach the asphalt road that rides down to the town center and Levanto's sandy beach.

It’s our first time in Levanto, and the rides we’ve done so far have been awesome! The Supertrail has a little bit of everything—from flow sections to rock gardens to the challenging final stretch that really puts you to the test one last time. After the ride, you’ll definitely need hand sanitizer and band-aids. The hanging plants and shrubs have nasty thorns, but it’s worth it for this ride. Thanks, Ride.

I did the shortened version of the tour last week. And only did the second descent. I also shortened the ascent and simply took the road from Levanto towards Genoa, on which you do the last part of the original ascent. At the top, I took the first descent instead of the left. I just went straight on for a bit and then turned right into the second descent and there was very little traffic on the road on weekdays at 9am. The gradient is always about the same and pleasant, so you quickly get into a "pedaling flow".
The descent was great fun and is worthwhile both from the trail and the view.

The MTB Vigo trail is rideable, but in very poor condition.

The second trail section is really brilliant. As I said, it has very cool jumps and berms that are perfectly integrated and also slightly hidden. Not to mention the absolutely fantastic views you have on the trail.
