Alta Via Cinque Terre – La Spezia

Trail hinab nach La Spezia

The Alta Via Cinque Terre is one of the smoothest trails in Liguria. It is particularly attractive as a circular tour from La Spezia.

Description

The Alta Via Cinque Terre begins at the Foce di Drignana, an inconspicuous transition from the coastal region of the Cinque Terre to the hinterland of La Spezia. If you wish, you can reach this point directly via small country roads from La Spezia. However, the entrance in Riomaggiore is more spectacular - and much more attractive. To do this, take the regional train in La Spezia, get off after just one stop and start the tour in the picturesque coastal village of the Cinque Terre. Take the feeder road up to the SP370 - the magnificent panoramic road that towers high above the coast. It is considered one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Italy and is the perfect start to the Alta Via.

After the Foce di Drignana, the route continues on asphalt for a short distance before a bumpy but continuously rideable gravel road leads to the Piana della Corvara. This is where the actual Alta Via Cinque Terre begins: a fantastic, super-flowing S1 trail that stretches almost endlessly along the ridge. Especially in spring, when the trees are still bare of leaves, it offers spectacular views down to the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

At Selle Marveda, you leave the Alta Via briefly and circle Monte Capri on the north side. The trail has been maintained by local mountain bikers, is playful and really fun - but also contains a few short climbs. In cross-country mode, you return to the main route at La Croce, which now becomes wider at times and even runs as a gravel road for a while. Before the Passo del Telegrafo, you switch back to trail mode: the path down to the pass is steep, rough and technically demanding. You then follow trails parallel to the road: initially wide and flowing, then increasingly narrow and technical until you find yourself on a real S3 trail towards Campiglia. If you prefer a more leisurely ride, you can easily bypass this section on the parallel gravel road.

Campiglia marks the start of the final descent to La Spezia - but first you have to master a short, crisp climb to the mountain crest. From there, the route continues on gravel for a while before the next trail branches off to the left. Enduro races have already been held in this section - the forest is criss-crossed with countless single trails. It is worth following the GPX route, as not all of the trails are in good condition.

The last varied bouquet of trails leads down to the sea - right near the huge walled naval base. You have to circle it on the road before reaching the historic town center of La Spezia via side paths and small roads.
