Croce del Beigua
Description
The tour begins in a side valley not far from Cogoleto. From the village of Case Isola, the route follows a paved road steadily uphill to the Passo della Muraglione, maintaining this pace through the subsequent hamlets. The ascent then shifts to gravel and becomes increasingly strenuous, though water sources are available along the way. Numerous water sources provide this precious resource, which is urgently needed during the climb. At times, the gradient is steep, so that the loose gravel can only be tackled on a conventional mountain bike by riders in very good physical condition. E-mountain bikers have a clear advantage here.
At Rifugio Pratorotondo, there is an opportunity to stop for a break before tackling the final meters of elevation gain to the tour’s highest point at Croce del Beigua. The summit is reached at just under 1,300 meters above sea level. The summit cross marks this spot, which, like the entire ascent, offers outstanding panoramic views.
After a few meters heading east, the descent begins on Sentiero 626. A mix of gravel, roots, paved sections, and cart tracks ranging in difficulty from S2 to S3 awaits exploration. The route descends for an extended period to Monte Greppion and finally back to Passo della Muraglione. This is followed by another trail section of similar difficulty that leads back to the starting point. Overall, this is a long, demanding, and technically challenging trail descent that should ideally only be ridden in dry conditions. Due to the high proportion of dirt and loose rocks, the route is not recommended in wet conditions.
