Grosser Feldberg Trail-Kombi

Grosser Feldberg (Taunus)

The Grosse Feldberg in the Taunus Mountains is located just outside Frankfurt and is known for its trails. This route combines some of the region’s best-kept secret descents into a challenging ride.

Description

The tour begins at the Hohemark subway terminal on Line 3, at the foot of the Grosser Feldberg. At the start, you’ll warm up on gravel roads before the climb toward Altkönig begins, though you’ll soon switch to the path branching off to the right. Anyone who hasn’t warmed up by this point will definitely be warmed up after this section. The trail almost has the feel of an alpine path—it’s steep, rocky, and rugged, but it’s a lot of fun. You’ll need to stay focused on this section, which is rated difficulty level three. The trail ends a short distance above the Urselbach stream.

Next, you ride toward the second section of the day and tackle a 300-meter climb toward Altkönig. At the ridge, you turn right onto a challenging forest trail rated difficulty level three. The route leads through steep terrain down to the valley floor, where the next ascent to the Grosser Feldberg awaits. Here, another 350 meters of elevation gain are added. You follow gravel roads uphill, though the paved mountain road can be used as an alternative.

At the summit of the Grosser Feldberg, with its distinctive antenna, the third section begins—a true gem crafted with great care by local mountain bikers. Rated S2 in difficulty, this trail leads through the south side of the massif and joins a gravel road, which later takes you to the Fuchstanz forest inn. From there, the ascent continues on the north side to the summit of the Altkönig. This spot offers a sweeping view of the Frankfurt countryside and is extremely popular with mountain bikers, as it serves as the starting point for various attractive downhill runs.

In this variant, the route descends to Falkenstein. This is followed by another “Supertrail,” which reflects the great dedication of the local mountain bikers. You then ride through a residential neighborhood to reach the exhilarating final section over the Kocherfels. This section, rated difficulty level three, is challenging and includes a steep passage rated level four. The crossing of the picturesque Kronberg marks the end of this high-quality enduro loop. The return trip to Frankfurt can be made either by city rapid transit or via the bike path back to the starting point at Hohemark.
