Monte Bregagno

Monte Bregagno

Monte Bregagno is one of the dominant mountain peaks on Lake Como. There are no rocky outcrops here, just open meadows - ideal for mountain biking. The route over the summit has everything a bike tour can offer: from the asphalt road to the carrying passage on the ascent, from the rough single trail to the flow fireworks on the descent.

Description

The climb from Rezzonico to Monte Bregagno is a tough one. The first 900 vertical meters are on an asphalt road, which you could also ride on a shuttle. The road ends at a parking lot, where the route turns into a gravel road. Passing Alpe Rescascia, you reach the crossing at Sant'Amate, where the path up to Monte Bregagno begins on the right. Here you have to carry your bike, spend a short flat section in the middle in the saddle again and then tackle the final section on foot. Finally, you reach the summit, which offers an all-round panorama like few other mountains in the region. The view stretches from the Monte Rosa to the Bernina massif, embedded in the lake landscape of Lago di Como and Lago di Lugano. The first part of the descent is far less pleasant than the distant views. The first few meters through the steep terrain have to be mastered on foot, then a steep, rough but rideable singletrail leads over the north-eastern ridge of Monte Bregagno. After a little over 800 meters of trail descent, keep right at an alpine hut and follow an old mountain path to Alpe Puntolo. An up-and-down route on a beautiful but exhausting trail takes you to Alpe di Nalcim, the starting point of the final stretch down to Cremia. Pure flow is the order of the day here. The trail winds its way through the birch forest and only ends in this way in the village of Cremia. This section is a trail highlight of the upper Lake Como! After Cremia, there are two short trail sections with steps until the wonderful mule track back to Rezzonico begins near Prato.

The tour is a real adventure. I'm not sure if it will ever be ridden by bike. The flow fireworks sometimes have quite rough, loose ground. Always keep an eye on your GPS. You often can't see the path.
