San Bernardo

San Bernardo (Lago di Como)

The San Bernardo chapel is idyllically situated high above Lake Como near Dongo. The ascent leads comfortably along a small road, the descent on trails and gravel roads past old and largely abandoned mountain villages.

Description

From Dongo, initially ride south on the main road to Musso, turn right here and head up the long, asphalted climb to just before Monti Fiesso. This is where the trail begins up to the San Bernardo chapel, where a detour to the Sasso di Musso is a must. The view from this round grassy peak is fantastic. The descent starts in San Bernardo and leads over the north side of the mountain. A rough but rideable singletrail with wonderful sections leads to the largely abandoned village of Piazze. There is a trail down to the valley floor here, but then the rest of the descent back to Dongo would have to be on a road. That's why you stay on the little road in Piazze for a while, reach Tegano this way and then head for the starting point in Dongo via the old access path.

The trail is absolutely not worth the meters in altitude. Only the view is worth it.

The upper part of the trail to Piazze has been completely restored. This means it is no longer particularly difficult to ride. I would now describe this part as perfectly suitable for eMTBs.
In the lower part, unfortunately, there is a lot of riding on tarred roads.
For half a day, however, a welcome tour with a great panorama and away from the hustle and bustle of the lake.

Very cool in the upper area, unfortunately you give away valuable meters of altitude in the last quarter on rather boring forest roads / cart paths
