Alpe di Esino
Description
In Varenna, you leave the hustle and bustle of the town center on the mountain road up to Esino Lario. Bend after bend, the road winds its way up into the wild valley. Once you reach the village of Esino Lario, follow the road unabated, but then keep right in a left-hand bend to reach Cainallo, where a ski lift operates in winter and where the highest point of the tour is reached. You now follow a gravel road for a while until a marked single trail branches off to the right at a forest clearing. This is the start of a wonderful and flowing trail section until you have to climb a few more meters on a gravel road. This is how you reach the Alpe di Esino. Now there are two options: on the right, a flowy and fun trail rides down to Ortanella. The left-hand option is more technical, more challenging but also more varied. Ortanella is then the starting point for the second part of the descent, which begins on a small road but soon turns into a single trail. This trail always rides along the ridge, is fast and flowy at times, but also has the odd tricky section, especially in the lower part. The trail then leads down to Vezio, from where you can ride directly down to the center of Varenna on a mule track.

I rode the trail today and wouldn't do it a second time. Still ok at the top, but so steep and blocked at the bottom that you can hardly ride once. I wouldn't recommend this tour unless you want to do something for your fitness. But if you like trail fun, you won't get your money's worth here.
