Monte Faraut

Monte Faraut

The Monte Faraut summit is located in Valle Maira and is a thoroughbred bike 3000-meter peak that, with a little skill in tour planning, offers one of the longest descents and one of the highest ridge crossings in the area.

Description

The tour starts in Acceglio and winds its way along the Strada Provinicale 422 di Valle Macra to Villar. We recommend passing through the village of Villar, which is characterized by the traditional architectural style of the region and an idyllic setting that is rarely found anywhere else. From here, you then take an asphalt road, which later becomes a gravel road that rides endlessly up to La Colletta at 2850 meters above sea level. This ascent rides up over 1500 meters in altitude. There are two water points in the middle section. Once you reach La Colletta, you have a sweeping view of the French Alps and the border area between Italy and France. The tour now takes you westwards, pushing or carrying, up to Monte Faraut at 3046 meters above sea level. In the meantime, you will pass historic buildings of the Vallo Alpino and wonder how they managed to build such defensive lines at an altitude of over 3000 meters above sea level.

After a well-earned snack at the summit, you will return to La Colletta on the ascent route with a difficulty of S1 to S3. Then you roll through to Colle Traversia and take the traverse to Passo Lausetto (2889 meters above sea level). Here you have to carry your bike over the stones for a short time, but this section is manageable even with an e-mountain bike. From Passo Lausetto, the real trail adventure begins. Initially from S1 to S2 up to Colle Rui, from here the trail over La Colletta becomes increasingly challenging and winds its way back under Monte Castello to the main road in Chiappera. Once you reach Chiappera, the trail adventure is far from over. Here you briefly join the old military road and then wind your way back to Acceglio. Conclusion: With a total of over 2000 Elevation loss, this is a huge trail firework in the middle of the Western Alps.

I rode the route yesterday on an e-bike. Monte Faraut is easy to pedal up. Just before the Colle della Val Fissela, you have to carry the bike on your shoulder (about 5 minutes). The descent has quite a bit of loose rock these days. But the views and the experience are amazing.

We rode the tour on 1.7.2023. Beautiful! We also skipped Monte Farault and for the traverse from La Colletta to Colle della Val di Fissela the same conditions apply as above. I wouldn't do it with an E-MTB.
We started in Lausetto and at the end we briefly took the main road in Saretto and from there rode left along a very beautiful high-level trail directly back to Lausetto.

Climbs in the Valle Maira are almost endless! The landscape is gigantic and lonely! La Colletta is easy to reach by e-bike! We skipped Monte Faraud itself, as the rest of the tour still seemed far enough for us!
The slope crossing to Colle della Val Fissela turned out to be challenging on an e-bike! Initially still wide and easy to ride, then increasingly narrow and exposed with a partly slippery path! Not to be underestimated with an e-bike. The last ascent to the Colle della Fissella was really difficult, as the path in this steep gully has slipped down due to the weather! If you can't carry your e-bike on your shoulders and aren't one hundred percent sure-footed, you won't get any further here! Two of us managed it, but it was worth the effort. Then there was another rocky slope to traverse, but from Passo Lauset onwards the trail fun began. It was awesome up to Colle Rul! After that, however, it became increasingly blocked with tight bends in steep terrain, until it became a little more moderate again in the forest and after Chiappera there was a nice up and down trail back to Acceglio.
