Punta della Gardetta

Monte Chersogno (Valle Maira)

The Valle Maira is known for its high-altitude, seemingly endless trails and military tracks. Nowhere better to experience them than on the tour to Punta della Gardetta, crowned with a 1700 Elevation loss descent.

Description

The tour starts on the valley floor of Valle Maira, where you turn onto a former road to Elva that is closed to traffic. This road is officially closed due to the risk of falling rocks and everyone rides it at their own risk. Nevertheless, it is the usual ascent for mountain bikers to Elva. Alternatively, you can also ride towards Elva via Stroppo. The destination of the ascent is the Colle di Sampeyre. In this way, over 1300 meters of altitude add up in one ascent. But don't get too excited, there are now another 350 meters of ascent on the plan. To do this, follow the Strada del Cannoni northwards, which finally turns into a trail after the Colle della Bicocca. You will have to push your bike in between, pass Lago Camoscere and reach the culmination point of the tour at Punta della Gardetta (2647 meters above sea level). Almost thirty kilometers of ascent are already in your calves!

The descent to Colle di Chiosso is very technical, but then becomes increasingly smooth. You pass the hamlet of Grange Chiotti and recover for a while on a gravel section and the transfer over to San Vittore. Here you enter the next trail. High above the valley floor, the trail hugs the steep southern flank of the Valle Maira and shortly afterwards rides directly down to the starting point of the tour.

After about 260m there is a gate which cannot be bypassed without great danger of falling (shimmy around 100m above the abyss on the outside). And then there is a second one on the other side. Make the ascent via Stroppo
