Nanos

The Nano with its steep slopes offers breathtaking views and countless trail descents. In combination with the military trails, the Kretenweg is one of the longest.

Description

The tour begins in the tranquil village of Podnanos, where the route initially leads briefly on asphalt along the main road before riding uphill along relaxed serpentines on an old military road. Along the way, a spring provides water, which is particularly important on longer tours. There are already great views during the ascent, and at the saddle near the Eko Koca Nanos, an impressive panorama opens up to the north with views as far as the Karawanken and Triglav.

From there, the route first descends slightly and then climbs steadily to the Pleša/Nanos transmission mast, the highest point of the tour. Here, especially in the southern area of the antennas, a spectacular panorama awaits in clear and dry air.

The trail descent from this point is as magnificent as it is varied. The start is right at the summit by the antennas, from where the entire mountain is traversed. The ground is a mixture of karst rock - partly loose, partly firm - and earth, which means a ride with difficulty levels from S1 to S2, and even S3 in places. The descent should not be underestimated, as the blocked stones can dig deep into the tire tread in places, requiring an active and attentive riding style.

Near Vrh Debele stene, the route briefly climbs again before continuing in the same varied manner to the managed Eko Koca Nanos hut. This hut is known for its panoramic location, fair prices and good traditional cuisine with generous portions.

From the hut, you follow a military road that is relatively easy to navigate. You eventually leave this again and cross the ascent route, which leads to the final trail, which becomes increasingly flowy and leads directly back to Podnanos on an S1 level.
