Penegal
Description
The tour starts directly at Lake Kaltern and winds its way via St. Nikolaus along the Mendel Pass road to the Mendel Pass. From here, you have stunning views of the Adige Valley and the Dolomites. At the pass itself, the route goes downhill for a few meters before turning right towards Penegal (Monte Largaden), which is relatively steep, but in terms of altitude, a quick climb. At the summit or on the ridge, the view extends from the Ortler mountains to the Dolomites and leaves nothing to be desired.
The descent runs along the ridge in the upper part with a difficulty of S1 to S2 in places. Once you reach the Mendel Pass, however, a prohibition sign awaits. Here, everyone has to decide for themselves whether to skip the upper 200 vertical meters and ride down the road or plunge into the trail here. The top section is very challenging, but then it stays challenging. The trail winds its way down to an altitude of around 750 meters above sea level before you take a short uphill section, cross the Mendelbahn and then stay on this forest trail for around two kilometers before joining the Prazollersteig and finally continuing the trail fireworks. At difficulty levels S1 to S2, the trail leads to the sports facility and from here continues at S1 level down through the vineyards to the starting point at Lake Kaltern. Once you reach the bottom, we definitely recommend a good glass of regional wine to toast the day, because you rarely get a better one anywhere.

I rode it a week ago and thought it was great. I was able to keep the climb up the Mendel Pass road to a minimum by taking a detour via the trail (without having to push!) and a forest road—the new Avinox M2S makes that possible. I only had to switch to the pass road for the last few hairpin turns. From Penegal at the very top down to Lake Kaltern, you ride 1,500 meters of elevation gain almost entirely on singletrack—hats off to the designer!
