Description

Carinthia is primarily known for its pleasant Mediterranean climate and abundance of lakes. The fact that the Prolitzen Trail on the Gerlitzen is a technically challenging and varied downhill trail comes as a surprise to many.

The tour starts in the western part of Lake Ossiach. Directly at the idyllic Seepark on the shore, you first follow the official cycle path towards Treffen am Ossiacher See and then climb steadily up to the Kanzelhöhe via Gerlitzenstrasse with long, even sections. The uphill is entirely on asphalt and can therefore be tackled with relatively little effort. Alternatively, you can also complete the ascent with the Kanzelbahn and avoid the pedalable section completely. Either way, you reach the Kanzelhöhe with the large apartment complex, which is considered a kind of pre-summit of the Gerlitzen. The view here is very impressive and opens up an unusual view over the Carinthian lake district.

From the Kanzelhöhe, the descent begins on the Prolitzen Trail. This is technically demanding and is considered difficult. In combination with the loose surface, the rideable range is between difficulty S2 and S3. The trail is also enhanced by jumps and artificial elements, which should be ridden cleanly as otherwise it quickly becomes choppy. An entry lap is therefore highly recommended for repeat rides. In addition, the terrain is exposed in places and slightly at risk of falling, which is why a controlled riding style is advisable.

After around 1000 Elevation loss you reach the Kanzelbahn area again and from there return to the starting point at Lake Ossiach.
