Schluchten-Tour
Description
Start in El Pagador on the north coast at a beach house with parking facilities. You then roll along the coast towards Las Palmas, initially idyllically through the villages, then for a short stretch along the busy road. This section is short-lived, however, as you soon turn right and climb up a gravel road through banana plantations. This takes you to the first houses on the ridge and you then climb up on small roads to Firgas. Here you start the first singletrail descent into the Virgen Gorge (Barranco de la Virgen). The path winds its way through the steep agricultural terrain and finally down into the wild, rocky gorge. It ends in front of a bizarre backdrop: The remains of a former hotel stand in the narrow valley floor. The water here was said to have healing powers, which is why a spa hotel was once operated here. We leave the gorge via a gravel path and climb up a road from which the full dimensions of the Barranco can be seen. We climb up through a sea of cacti to the village of Carreteria, where we reach the eucalyptus belt. These trees with the soft soil form the basis of many great trails, in this case the crossing and descent into the next gorge - the Barranco de los Tilos. The scenario is repeated here: a winding descent down into the gorge (this time less technical but super flowy) and up again via a road on the opposite side. This gorge is even more impressive from above than the first one!
On a (steep) asphalt road, you climb up to the Area Recreativa Santa Cristina and start the long descent back to the sea. After a super-flowy start, you later wind your way through the cactus world on a small, somewhat dilapidated path and then arrow along an asphalt road through San Juan to Gallego. A bumpy section of trail leads down to the road and a little later you reach the starting point of the Sendero Cuesta de Silva. This historic trail leads down to the coast, but is now closed due to a landslide. However, the path is doable and a special final section. Initially, you have to ride through the tunnel on a footpath alongside the highway. Immediately after the tunnel, turn left and then it's quiet again! The mule track now leads through the steep, rocky terrain. The slippery section is easily passable on foot but not without danger. Many loose boulders are still hanging from the top of the wall. After this section, the going is smoother again, there is a short damaged section, then you head down to the sea in serpentine mode. If you want to skip this section, follow the road (GC 291) to the coast. Follow the road along the coast back to the starting point. On this section along the coast, there are several places to stop for refreshments to round off the tour.
