Roque Nublo - Soria

Roque Nublo (Gran Canaria)

This sporty tour in the heart of Gran Canaria is a blast in terms of trails and scenery. The region is considered to be one of the most charming parts of the island and also impresses with great singletrail descents.

Description

The starting point is the La Goleta parking lot right next to Roque Nublo. Beware, there are a lot of tourists here, parking spaces are always in short supply and the first section of the tour towards the extraordinary rock formation is not exactly a deserted mountain idyll. But that changes quickly, most of the day-trippers just want to get to the photo spot with the rock. They usually don't get any further with their footwear anyway, as this is where the mountain bikers' terrain begins. We circle the Roque Nublo and head into a crisp trail that definitely has an Arizona feel to it. The trail is racy and leads down to the road at the Degollada del Aserrador. The trail continues on the opposite side of the road and rides up to the Montana de los Jarones. You follow the ridge in a flowing and fun way, with a few uphill sections every now and then, but all in all a great descent through a wonderful pine forest. Eventually, you are spit out at a road (La Data), which we will take later for the return trip up to the parking lot. But now it's time to tack on the (optional) additional loop to Soria.

The botanical backdrop changes on this section. The pine forest of the summit region becomes a barren volcanic landscape. The flow from before has given way to a much tougher pace. The path down to Soria is rocky and rough, but a worthwhile route for those with good riding technique. Elevation losses of 300 meters accumulate in this way until the path finally ends at a road.

This is the end of the fun and the long ride back up to the parking lot is a feat of strength. A refreshment stop at the restaurant a little further down in Soria is well worth it! It's 900 meters up to the parking lot. From Soria, you ride on a gravel road up to the pass (La Data), which you have already passed once on the descent. Here the surface changes to asphalt and you fight your way up the remaining 600 meters of altitude via Ayacata to the Goleta Pass.

Note:

  • The tour can also be ridden as a shuttle tour from the Maspalomas region, starting on the Pico de las Nieves. From Soria, you end up rolling all the way down the valley to the sea, but almost all on one road with the exception of the challenging singletrail option down to the valley floor at El Caidero.
  • The tour can easily be adapted in length by skipping the loop to Soria or starting the tour in Ayacata and skipping the loop around Roque Nublo.

The trail around Roque Nublo is now closed to mountain bikers. At the turn-off from the road, where all the tourists park their cars, there are rangers controlling the trails. Even pedestrians now require a permit and registration via a QR code. During the main season Nov - Feb, controls are also carried out during the week. Anyway, it is teeming with tourists and there is no flow.
