Pico de las Nieves - Tirajana-Abfahrt

Pico de las Nieves - Tirajana

The Tirajana descent is one of the southern descents from Pico de la Nieves, the highest point in Gran Canaria. The great, rugged landscape is the best backdrop for this racy singletrail ride.

Description

The starting point is the summit with the transmission masts, which can be easily reached by shuttle or cab. From up here, descents are possible in virtually all directions; the Tiajana version is the south-east version through the volcanic Tirajana region down to the sea. The start is a flowy ride through the pine forests of the summit region. The terrain becomes more barren the further you ride down, the trail winds its way through the wild plateau and changes character with the steep descent down to Taidia. The trail is tricky and challenging, rough but rideable. It winds down serpentine after serpentine into the valley to the first houses. Now the style changes back to a more flowy zone and leads down to Santa Lucia (where there are also refreshment facilities for once, a rather rare option on the trails on the south side of Gran Canaria).

The second part of the descent is now much less spectacular. Once again, you can take a few singletrail sections with you, then change sides of the valley at the reservoir, climb a little again and roll downhill on a gravel road for a total of 14 kilometers to Juan Grande on the coast. If you are staying in the Maspalomas region, you can now cycle back along the road and later along the cycle paths.

Tip: Start the tour as a circular route in Santa Lucia and pedal to the summit under your own steam via San Bartolomé and Ayacata. The (scenic) ascent is 28 kilometers long and there are 1400 meters of altitude to climb.
