Brienzer Rothorn

Brienzer Rothorn

The descent from the Brienzer Rothorn to Brienz is a gem among the single trails in the Bernese Oberland. The route can be perfectly integrated into an enduro tour from Giswil, including a postbus shuttle to the Glaubenbielen Pass, cable car ride to the Brienzer Rothorn and train ride up to the Brünig Pass.

Description

In Giswil, you start by hanging your bike on the rear rack of the Postbus and riding up to the Glaubenbielen Pass. The first few meters under your own steam lead slightly uphill to Jänzimatt, where the first singletrail descent awaits. This leads in the direction of Sörenberg, at Arnischwand you meet the pass road again and then ride down to the valley floor on the left-hand side of the road. Here you have already reached the second shuttle of the day: the gondola lift up to the Brienzer Rothorn. At the mountain station, you roll through the gallery and head down to the Eiseesattel on trails. The Eiseesattel is the starting point of the long super descent to Brienz. This starts with a wide trail, which then becomes narrower and narrower down to the Gibelegg. The trail leads past the Irtschelen-Alp and down along the Lammbachgraben towards Schwanden; enormously varied, winding, fun, technical, flowing, rooty, velvety smooth - everything is included. At Oberschwanden, you head onto the official bike route. Finally, you reach Brienz and take the train up to the Brünig Pass. The third stage of the Rothorn Tour takes you a few meters along the Brünig Pass road before turning onto the single trail along the Balmflue at a parking area. This flowing path leads down to Lungern, where you roll along the left bank of Lake Lungern to Kaisertuhl. The last part of the tour down to Giswil is another single trail that starts just above Kaiserstuhl. Conclusion: An exceptional tour with lots of shuttles, great panoramic views and first-class singletrails.

A fantastic descent to Brienz!
According to the locals, you have to be lucky with the Postbus driver if he takes more bikes than the four (not five, as is the case with the big Postbuses) at the back.
on the carrier.
We cranked up the Brünig from Brienz, which was quite a slog to say the least in the midday 30 degrees and vacation traffic.
But still great!

Very cool tour, Postauto-Tour with carrier for 4 bikes, today an additional 2 inside, top departures, public transport connections too

In summer 2023, renovation work for the new aerial cableway will take place on the Brienzer Rothorn. I was standing in front of closed doors today🤦

Tour last Fri. Brilliant, one of the best in (central) Switzerland. I took the Turrenbahn up at the end of Lungern, went down briefly and then up to Dundelegg. From there another great descent (easy at the beginning, challenging later, unfortunately road at the end) to Giswil. This brings you to 3700Hm descent with 530Hm ascent... :-) Even cooler would probably be the addition via Hasliberg-Käserstatt-Gibel-Hüttstett-Lungern...

Very cool tour. Postbus recommended to reserve. Newly possible, as they have mounted a rear carrier. Large loose stones at the top of the Rothorn, sloping sideways. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But just like so often in the high alpine mountains.

I asked Postauto Zentralschweiz today about bike transportation from Giswil to Glaubenbielen and received the following reply:.

"We only have very limited options for transporting bikes. There are no rear racks for bikes on this line. There is a minibus on the route. Depending on the weather, the Postbus is full of individual passengers and there is no more room for bicycles. The driver has the decision and therefore it remains a risk whether you can actually ride along or unfortunately remain standing.
We're sorry that we can't give you better news."

It's just a risk and more of an advantage to be out and about in not-so-great hiking weather to use the shuttle on the Glaubenbielen.

Hello Askja
I rode down the trail from Brienzer Rothorn to Brienz today. The trail along the Lammbachgraben is still closed until the end of 2021 due to construction work on the trail.
However, there is a detour, which is very fun to ride. You ride down the hiking trail next to the Derflibach. You don't have to destroy the meters of altitude on the road. I rode all the way down on trails.

Btw, neither the Rothornbahn nor the tourist information center (Brienz or Interlaken) knew that the trail along the Lammbachgraben was closed.

Hello Andi
Great - many thanks for your report! That sounds very promising :-)

I rode the trail on 22.7. and the bus from Giswil to the Glaubenbieler Pass took me with my bike without any problems and the driver also confirmed on request that every post bus does this, as long as it is not full of passengers. But beware, the bus only rides 3 times a day (8.25 / 11.25 / 16.25). The first part from the pass to the Sörenberg valley station is not very exhilarating (rooted), if you are in a hurry you can also go down the road. But since the whole tour isn't that long, you can definitely give it a try. The downhill from Rothorn to Brienz is top class. The first 2-300 Elevation loss are a bit blocked, but then 1,300 are pure fun. You arrive in Brienz right by the bathing area - a dip in the water for dessert. Wonderful! The train station is 5 minutes away from the Badi and the train back to Giswil rides every hour at X.25.

Hello Cuno.
According to the Switzerland Mobile app, the route along the Lammbachgraben is closed - were you able to ride it? Thanks for the feedback.
Greetings
A.

The bus line from Giswil to the Glaubenbiel pass no longer takes bicycles!
