Bachalpsee Grindelwald

Bachsee Grindelwald

The Bachalpsee above the Grosse Scheidegg is one of Grindelwald's most famous photo subjects and offers an excellent singletrail descent that is largely signposted as a mountain bike route. The tour is a must for mountain bikers in the Bernese Oberland

Description

Harmless but spectacular, the tour starts on the asphalt road up to Grosse Scheidegg. 900 meters of altitude difference are overcome in the shadow of the Eiger north face and the Wetterhorn. You could also take the bus up here. From the top of the pass, you continue to climb, pass Alp Grindel and finally reach the Firstbahn mountain station. Theoretically, it would also be possible to take the gondola up to this point. In First, follow the alpine road to the Bachsee lake. The scenery up here is phenomenal, with the glaciated Wetterhorn reflected in the steel-blue mountain lake. The descent from Bachsee back to Grindelwald leads along the fun and varied single trail to Bachläger. The trail offers top-class alpine singletrail fun. Up to Berghaus Waldspitz, you are on a small road for a few meters, but then turn left immediately after the restaurant onto the next singletrail. These are now almost exclusively flowing, beautiful and varied single trails that lead through the wooded terrain to the first houses in Grindelwald.

Tip: Ride the tour outside of the Firstbahn summer season because there are significantly fewer hikers in the Bachsee region.

A pleasant ride from Grindelwald to Grosse Scheidegg . The last 300 meters Grosse Scheidegg to Bachsee, especially from the First crisp, you will feel the legs :-) There are also many hikers on the way. But it goes well, as the path is mostly wide. The descent offers both technical and flowing passages. A strenuous, beautiful tour with wonderful nature.

Brilliant tour!
As we were a bit late, we took the bus up to Grosse Scheidegg (not cheap: 12.50 per bike despite the day bike pass).
There were lots of tourists between First and Bachsee (sunny Monday in July), but thanks to the wide gravel path and a swisstrailbell this was no problem.
On the subsequent descent, we encountered practically no hikers, but great single trails with lots of flowy sections.

One of the most beautiful tours I've done this year. Fantastic panorama, pleasant ascent and a brilliant descent. It's a bit technical and bumpy at the start, but easy to ride, then becomes increasingly flowy. There are lots of hikers between First and Bachsee, but there is enough space for everyone on the little road. After the Bachsee on the descent, we hardly met anyone else.

The technical rating for the downhill seems rather too easy to me. It has a few drops over boulders and a river bed on the way where even good riders descend.

I rode the (very good) E-MTB today. As an advanced rider but not a pro ;-) everything was rideable. Had to stop from time to time to get an overview of the rocks and roots, but was able to ride everything. Technically, however, the descent is really something for advanced riders.

Still riding at the weekend. Some icy sections uphill on the road, which I preferred to push. The trail was completely free of snow and ice. Perfect conditions and an incredible panorama.

A tour with great views and an ingenious descent. The first part up to Grosse Scheidegg is a pleasant ascent on a tarred road, followed by repeated steep ramps up to Bachalpsee. The descent in the first part is interspersed with technical passages, but can be ridden throughout by experienced riders. Second part in the forest steeper but still rideable and fun. Absolutely worthwhile tour! Especially with a shortcut via the First gondola lift, but also well frequented by hikers in the main season.

Checked 2020

If you follow the official red bike signs, you can look forward to a gravel highway ride. It is best to take the gondola up to First and start the tour from there. The route from Grosse Scheidegg to First has to be ridden on the gravel path or shared with many hikers on the slightly higher hiking trail. So you can save yourself the trouble. At Bachalpsee, follow the bike trail signs, here you finally come to a single trail and after Waldspitz turn off onto the hiking trail.
