Eiger-Trail

The Eiger Trail is one of the most famous and impressive hiking trails in Switzerland. Mountain bikers are not welcome here. At off-peak times, out of season and with prudent behavior, the trail is also a trail of superlatives for bikers.

Description

Although a railroad rides up to Kleine Scheidegg, the ascent here is entirely under your own steam as the cogwheel railroad does not take bicycles. Therefore, you can reach the Scheidegg on the signposted mountain bike route past Brandegg or you can climb up a small road to the Männlichen mountain station. This option is only recommended in the low season, as there are many hikers on the following section to Kleine Scheidegg. However, the Eiger Trail has not yet been earned. From Kleine Scheidegg, a steep cart path rides 260 meters up to the Eiger Glacier station, where the cogwheel railroad then disappears into the tunnel on its way to the Jungfraujoch. This is where the Eiger Trail descent begins. It is extremely important to tackle this only at off-peak times and in the low season, otherwise you are sure to get into trouble with hikers who are not always bike-friendly. The evening hours are best, when the north face of the Eiger glows in the evening light. The Eiger Trail rides right alongside this world-famous rock face - a spectacle like no other. From Alpiglen, follow the signposted hiking trail downhill to Grindelwald.

Alternatives: Ascent from Grindelwald along the mountain bike route to Kleine Scheidegg

Tip: Ride the descent in summer late in the evening when the sun is low. Then all the hikers are already at home and the north face of the Eiger shows itself in a particularly beautiful light

The long ascent is only rewarded by the magnificent panorama. Much of the trail has been completely relaxed and is almost suitable for baby carriages and flip-flops. There are more rewarding tours. But at least the tourists enjoy us bikers and have something more to take photos of ;-)

There is a driving ban from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and the Eigertrail also has a prohibition sign for bicycles! Hikers are always shouting at you! The bike signs all ride on asphalt or gravel paths, Grindelwald is not a singletrail bike area! What a pity!

Bikes are taken on the cog railroad from Grindelwald or Wengen from 15:45. (as of September 2021)

The trail to the other side (towards Wengen) on the lateral moraine of the Eiger Glacier and later over stone fields from Haaregg to wyssi flue to Wixi, however, is passable for bikers (as of July 12, 18) and highly recommended for technically good bikers!

As of July 12, 2018, the trail is unfortunately prohibited for our guests
