Sustenpass

The Susten Pass is an inconspicuously beautiful mountain pass that impresses with its high alpine scenery. The route away from the main road is a gem on a bike.

Description

We start the tour to Göschenen at the train station and first head downhill to Wassen. The village lies at the foot of the Susten Pass and the ascent now takes place on the fort road on the southern side of the valley. You climb up the Meiental valley parallel to the main road. The last section rides along the historic trade route and is very steep. The singletrail descent to the Steisee impresses with its fantastic glacier backdrop. This is followed by a short section on the pass road until you finally ride back downhill parallel to it through the Gadmerental valley. High above the Aare Gorge, the route continues from here to Meiringen. Ideally, you should start the tour in Lucerne, ride the train to Göschenen and then take the train from Meiringen back to Lucerne after the tour.

I recently did the Sustenpass tour in the opposite direction, from Innertkirchen to Wassen. I really enjoyed the scenery. In the morning it was a bit rainy and cloudy and around noon the blue sky and the sun came out. Because of the rain, the streams were in flood, which created a beautiful soundscape and was often very fascinating to the eye. Like other tours, I also recorded this tour on video and uploaded it to YouTube
