Urschner Höhenweg Uhrzeigersinn

Urschner Höhenweg

The Urschner Höhenweg is one of the best-known mountain bike routes in the Andermatt region. The clockwise version via Tiefenbach also offers a shuttle option with the Furka Pass post bus.

Description

From Andermatt, you initially cross the valley floor to Realp at the foot of the Furka Pass. Now you have to follow the main road to Tiefenbach in the direction of the Furka Pass. In the summer months there can be a lot of traffic on this section, which is why the PostBus shuttle is a good option. The ascent from Realp to Tiefenbach adds up to 560 meters before turning right onto the gravel road to Tätsch. This adds another 200 meters in altitude, which you then have to lose again on a less spectacular gravel road. The singletrail variant in the direction of Lochberg is not rideable. Finally, you reach the Lochberg Pass and the well-maintained Urschner Höhenweg trail. Climb up via Blauseeli and Lutersee to just below Rossmettlen. This is where the descent back to Andermatt begins on a flowing and fun 700-metre single trail. This leads to the Andermatt golf course, from where it is finally just a stone's throw back to the village center.

Note: The Urschner Höhenweg is also available in an anticlockwise direction. In this version, the route is much more attractive, but rides through a bike ban on the final descent to Realp.

On October 20, 2024, I rode the "legal" version in a clockwise direction, with a detour via Albert-Heim Hütte. At the end of the day, I had covered 1550 vertical meters and 40 km on my organic bike (Santacruz Hightower). But I was also very annoyed that I hadn't done the "forbidden" counter-clockwise variant. I did the whole fun part of the Ursener Höhenweg in the legal variant (clockwise) and kept wondering about the point of this variant.... Next time, I would definitely ignore the driving ban and do the "fun" and "flowy" variant in an anti-clockwise direction!

We did the tour on 14.10.2024. However, we postponed the start to Göschenen as we marathoners wanted a little more altitude.

Super trail is great fun on a cross-country bike and a real treat.

I rode the tour on 10.8. from Tiefenbach (please note: only 2 post buses per day! If the morning course is too early and you are traveling by car, you can leave it in Tiefenbach and take the post bus back up at 15.35...). I think the clockwise Urschnertrail is great (I don't understand what's unattractive about it). It can almost always be ridden, even when it goes uphill, and the final descent to Hospental or Andermatt is wonderful! The water drains with rubber "plates" that lie flat under the edges are ingenious... Attention, even though the trail is designed for bikes and is an official bike trail (Switzerland-Mobility signposted), it is also a hiking trail...
