Capanna Cadlimo

Capanna Cadlimo Lago Scuro

The Capanna Cadlimo is located on the watershed between the Mediterranean and the North Sea in the triangle between Airolo, the Lukmanier Pass and the Oberalp Pass and can be reached on a wild mountain bike tour from Airolo. You will be rewarded with picturesque scenery along countless lakes and a descent of almost ten kilometers of singletrack back to the starting point in Airolo.

Description

From Airolo, you ride to the village of Madrano and tackle the ascent to Lago Ritom. The route is flat again along the reservoir, after which a steep alpine road leads to Lago di Tom, where you already have around 900 meters of altitude in your legs. The remaining 500 vertical meters to Cap. Cadlimo is an alternation of pushing and carrying, with sections along the numerous lakes. The Cap. Cadlimo can be reached via some challenging hiking trails that require good surefootedness. A rest at the hut is definitely worthwhile, as the first two kilometers of the descent are not very rideable and numerous scree fields have to be crossed without losing much altitude. Then the fun begins, as you follow a narrow but smooth path through alpine meadows for three kilometers. After the Alpe di Lago, the descent becomes steeper, leads briefly over an alpine road and then becomes technically demanding. Past the Alp Böcc da Ce, the wild descent continues along a kind of bobsleigh run, where a clever choice of line is an advantage. Just above the village of Madrano, you reach a small road, wind through the pretty alleyways and reach Airolo via meadow trails and local roads.

Note:

  • You can save around 700 vertical meters with the Piotta - Ritom funicular, but bike transport is only possible between 1:15 pm and 3:15 pm (as of August 2022).

As described in the tour description and the commentary by Peter_S, this tour is more of a training round for shouldering the bike than riding it.
However, the view from the Cadlimo is brilliant.

Nevertheless:
I wouldn't do the tour again. The ratio of trail riding and trail shouldering/pushing is not right for me here.

Short summary: The tour is an imposition!
You carry, push up to the Capanna Cadlimo, exhausting but doable. Beautiful hut with a great view.
What comes next is less fun. We have been carried down for two kilometers. In reality, it's at least 5 km and the scree fields don't want to end.
The following trails on the alpine meadows are moderately fun. The drop of wormwood is the fun and wild trail at the end.
Overall, however, the ascent is not worth it. We would not recommend this tour.
