Val Canaria

The well-known tour from the Gotthard Pass to Val Canaria is technically easy, but offers some treats, such as the ascent on the Tremola road.

Description

Right on the outskirts of Airolo, the route climbs up a gravel road. A little below the main road, you reach the old Gotthard Pass road and follow it past the barracks at Motto Bartola. A little later, the road turns into the historic and legendary Tremola route, which rides in countless hairpin bends and over even more countless cobblestones to the top of the Gotthard Pass. At Lago della Piazzo, you reach the signposted "Gottardo Bike" mountain bike route. Follow the signs to Passo Scimfuss and finally to Alp Orello. Good riders take the single trail down to Pautàn, moderate riders stay on the signposted route. At Raièd, turn left off the signposted route and follow the Canaria stream to the eastern edge of the village of Airolo. It is now just a stone's throw back to the starting point.

Alternatives: The Gotthard region was once of military importance for Switzerland, as can be seen from the countless entrances and embrasures that can be seen if you look closely. Deep inside the Gotthard massif are huge bunkers, one of which is accessible as a museum at the top of the pass.

Tips: Take the Postbus from Airolo to the Gotthard Pass
