Varneralp | Ride MTB

Varneralp

The Varneralp is a high plateau between Leukerbad and Crans-Montana and offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Valais. It can be approached by bike from different sides and there are numerous downhill options. The most attractive but also most challenging route starts in Leukerbad.

Description

Fittingly, you start the tour to Varneralp in Susten and take the bus from there to Leukerbad. Now follow the gravel road to Birchen  and then climb up to Alp Larschi. The path now becomes increasingly steeper until it leads through the middle of a rock face as a single trail. The passage is easily manageable on foot. Later you reach an alpine hut, a little below it a gravel road, which you now follow uphill again. It soon turns into a single trail, so you have to push your bike the last 270 meters up to Varneralp. The view from the inconspicuous summit with the wooden cross is simply phenomenal: opposite, one Valais 4000-metre peak follows the next. You then roll along a trail through the Varneralp, which is a kind of plateau. The trail, which is quite technical in places, leads along the tree line to the Tièche stream. You roll down a few meters to the Alp Cave du Sex, then continue along the ridge, but then branch off to the left. A steep serpentine trail leads into the wild valley, and one of the highlights of the tour is reached at the waterfall: the trail here leads behind the overhanging waterfall and is a special spectacle when there is a large volume of water. The singletrail now leads downhill along the stream, later you climb a few more meters on a small road and then turn right onto a fantastic singletrail through the increasingly dry forest area. Follow the first bisse (water conduit) until the next descent begins on the right, and finally roll along the lower bisse towards Varen. Through the vineyards and finally on the road back to Susten.

Options:

  • Simpler version of the original route: same route as the original route, but from Alp Nüschelet directly down towards Varen
  • Reverse direction starting in Crans-Montana: climb up to Cave du Sex and then on the singletrail up to Varneralp. The descent via the fantastic trail from Chäller to Varen, then back to Sierre through the Pfynwald

Top trail, occasionally very technical and steep. Especially before the waterfall (hardly rideable with very narrow, slippery and sloping serpentines).
A little exposed after the waterfall, but easy to ride.
Only a few hikers on the way.

Rode the tour today (30.08.2021). In the meantime, I would increase the riding technique to 5/6 instead of 4/6. The serpentine path to the waterfall is only rideable for very experienced bikers. Partly very exposed and slippery (dry). After the waterfall, the path leads straight down along the stream in the fall line. The path is already very rutted. Riding is much easier than walking ... but it is not easy, all loose stones. More like a stream bed than a trail. No real problem for experienced riders, provided there are no hikers on the trail.
Otherwise, a tour that demands a bit of riding technique and fitness. Not recommended for 08/15 bikers. But those who love a technical challenge will get their money's worth here. TOP!
