Gemmipass-Goppenstein | Ride MTB

Gemmipass-Goppenstein

The circular tour from Kandersteg over the Gemmi Pass to Goppenstein and back through the Lötschberg tunnel is a first-class singletrail spectacle for experienced mountain bikers with a head for heights.

Description

The tour starts in Kandersteg with a cable car ride up to Sunnbüel and from there through the fantastic mountain scenery around Lake Dauben. The route rides along wide roads to the Gemmi Pass. Now it's time for the descent through the Gemmiwand. The wide and secured path is not particularly difficult in terms of riding technique and leads over countless stairs. The focus here is less on the fun of the ride and more on the incredible scenery - the trail leads through the middle of a rock face. In Leukerbad, you later take the cable car up to the Rinderhütte and follow the super trail to Bachalp. In 2014, Ride named this single trail one of the ten most beautiful bike trails in Switzerland. From Bachalp, you reach Niwenalp, where the next flwoig singletrail section to the lower Feselalp begins. There is another ascent, first on a steep Apshalt road to Stafel and then on a singletrail up to Heruhubel. This is where the world-class descent into the Lötschental begins, first on a single trail to the Obere Meiggu and then on to the Untere Meiggu. A seemingly endless trail now leads through the steep forest area down to Mittal. Note: The path through the Rote Grabe directly to Goppenstein looks tempting on the Map, but is not rideable. From Mittal, you glide parallel to the main road to Goppenstein station, from where you can take the train back to Kandersteg through the Lötschberg tunnel.

Note: There are sometimes a lot of hikers on the trail in the Gemmiwand, who might not be too happy about mountain bikers on the trail - especially as there is a clearly visible no-biking sign at the start of the trail. Anyone who disregards this ban should at least do so during off-peak hours and therefore start the tour as early as possible. The Gemmi gondola lift is an attractive and conflict-free alternative for the route to Leukerbad.

I rode the Gemmiwand yesterday. In the morning I took the first cable car up Sunnbühel and about 1 hour later through the Gemmiwand. During the week and early in the day I only met 6 hikers and got off at each one and pushed the bike briefly. This was highly praised!
Mutual consideration is everything!
If you do the Gemmiwand, please do it early and with the necessary consideration.
Ride on!

We rode the trail through the Gemmiwand down to Leukerbad. This is not very difficult to ride. If you can handle the many irregular steps, you could ride anything. In our opinion, however, the safety ropes are too low for bikers and a fall here could quickly prove fatal. Therefore, great caution is advised, even if the scenery is unique.
