Arenas Negras
Description
The starting point of this tour is Cueva de los Pajaros, on the way up from Chío to Teide National Park. There are numerous parking facilities along the road and just as many options for starting the tour. To get started, follow the signposted mountain bike route, which runs on a gravel road along the side of the mountain through open pine forests. The first highlight is Montaña Negra, which offers a stark contrast with its deep black lava landscape and bright green trees. An immaculately groomed gravel road leads through this impressive area and introduces the steady ascent to Montaña Cascajo through idyllic pine forests.
Shortly before Montaña Cascajo, the route turns sharply right onto a single trail (S1) that rides into the surreal lava world of Chinyero. Here you can expect flowing, fun trails that run through the impressive volcanic landscape. The trail circles the Chinyero mountain before rolling back to the main road on gravel roads. If you wish, you can return to the car early at this point.
Continue climbing up the road until you reach the entrance to Teide National Park. As bikes are strictly prohibited in the national park, turn right onto a gravel road and a little later turn right onto a singletrail descent. This section is technically challenging, as it rides through lava fields with a surface reminiscent of oversized chippings. However, the scenic experience is overwhelming and makes up for the effort. Further down, the trail dips into the pine forest, becomes smoother and is really fun with its flowing course. Finally, you roll back to the main road, where the car is parked just a few meters above.
Note: In Tenerife, driving on the official hiking routes is prohibited. The. However, the ban is consistently ignored by local mountain bikers. It is advisable to avoid the weekends because that is when many locals are out and about. It is the responsibility of each individual to ride this route on a mountain bike, with full awareness of the legal situation.
