El Portillo Supertrails

El Portillo (Teneriffa)

El Portillo is the gateway to Teide National Park, but also the starting point for some of the best-known and most amazing trail descents in the north of Tenerife.

Description

The tour starts in Puerto de la Cruz on the 348 bus, which rides up to El Portillo. The bikes can be stowed in the luggage compartment - ideally, the front wheel should be removed to save space. Thanks to the bus ride, you save 2000 meters of ascent. If you want to catch a glimpse of the Teide National Park, you can ride to El Portillo Alto and then roll back down the road from there - a detour that is well worth it.

After El Portillo, you first ride downhill on the road for a short distance until the first trail begins in a right-hand bend. This is a little rough, but runs through an impressive forest and lava landscape. You then return to the road and follow it to the next right-hand bend, where you turn off onto a gravel road. Further down, this turns into a trail that has been easily prepared by local mountain bikers and is not banned. The trail winds its way down to just above the Acampada de Chanajiga picnic area. From there, you climb up a gravel road with a moderate gradient of around 300 meters in altitude back to the main road.

On the well-maintained road, you climb another 200 meters in altitude before turning right onto the second trail descent of the day. This trail, which is signposted as a hiking trail (GR 131), is a real highlight: varied, flowing, tricky in places - there is something for everyone here. The super trail leads down to the official cycle route, which is located just above the lower tree line. You follow this cycle route, mostly flat, up to a striking ridge high above Realejo.

This is where the third part of the tour begins: a world-class trail created by mountain bikers. The super-fun trail at the lower edge of the forest, from where you roll to the Mirador de la Corona with its transmitter antenna and a fantastic view over the north coast of Tenerife. The next section of trail is a little rougher, but a worthwhile connection back to the civilization of Puerto de la Cruz. You reach a road, follow it briefly to the left and then turn onto the last trail that rides to the first houses of Realejo. From here, you cruise back to Puerto de la Cruz on small roads.

Conclusion: One of the undisputed MTB classics on the north side of Tenerife. An absolute must for mountain bikers on the island.

Note: In Tenerife, driving on the official hiking routes is prohibited. The. However, the ban is consistently ignored by local mountain bikers. It is advisable to avoid the weekends because that is when many locals are out and about. It is the responsibility of each individual to ride this route on a mountain bike, with full awareness of the legal situation.

A fantastic tour, I've never done anything like it before, so many Elevation losses at once - simply amazing. At the end I almost couldn't hold the handlebars anymore, but it was great fun!

Very nice trails, whereby the first section contains a lot of scree and is quite steep in places. Wide tires are a great advantage here, otherwise you'll be swimming around in the volcanic tuff.
The second section is absolutely fantastic. The traverse shows itself, but the last part is once again very beautiful. Although part of it is on quite bumpy pavement. All in all, a worthwhile trail.
Note: Ridebase does not offer shuttles. You can book guided tours with them, which include transportation up the mountain. No shuttle without a tour.
I rented a bike there, very nice owner and good value for money.
