Las Lajas Long Run

Las Lajas (Teneriffa)

This is the longest downhill version in the south of Tenerife and combines the bus shuttle with the well-known Vilaflor trails and the return route along the coast - in fact, it's all on trails!

Description

The tour begins with a bus ride from Costa Adeje to Teide National Park. The starting point of the descent is the Las Lajas camping and picnic area at 2100 meters above sea level. A short climb leads to the Montaña de Las Lajas, where the downhill trail begins. This varied trail (S2) runs through a dry, open pine forest and ends just below the picturesque village of Vilaflor (1450 meters above sea level). Incidentally, the village would also be an alternative starting point if you want to shorten the tour and save time - which would be a shame in terms of the overall experience. It is better to shorten the route down along the coast.

The Jama Trail, a route specially built for mountain bikers, begins below Vilaflor. This trail is in the solid S2/S3 range and offers numerous built jumps, all of which can be easily bypassed. There are also some short S4 sections, but these are clearly visible. The trail meanders seemingly endlessly through the rugged, dry bush landscape, offering spectacular views of the coastal region time and again. The Jama Trail ends at the first houses of Valle de San Lorenzo.

From here, there is a 130-metre ascent on an asphalt road to La Centinela, a magnificent viewpoint and the starting point for the next trail descent. The descent begins smoothly, but becomes a little rougher after a sharp right turn. This section is great fun, but requires caution as cacti often grow threateningly close to the trail. After crossing a road, the trail continues more smoothly and ends just above Las Chafiras. If you've had enough, you can roll back to Los Cristianos from here via country roads parallel to the highway.

However, the additional loop down to the coast is much more attractive. A fast, agile and sandy trail leads to Amarilla Golf and on to a trail directly on the coast. This coastal path is a little rough in places, but quickly changes back to a smoother course. After a short climb, you finally reach Costa del Silencio.

You can also shorten the tour here. However, it is worth taking the loop via Palm Mar, as the coastal trails are flowy and extremely fun to ride. In Palm Mar, you finally change to the road and ride towards Guaza. Shortly before the village, turn left and begin the ascent to the Mesas de Guaza (approx. 160 meters above sea level). This plateau is criss-crossed by a dense network of trails and offers the perfect connection to Los Cristianos. The final descent shows its jagged side once again: the trail is rocky, rough and has steps, especially in the upper section. The further you descend to Los Cristianos, the smoother the trail becomes.

Conclusion: An extraordinary tour through several climate zones, characterized by completely different trails and enormous contrasts: from the solitude in the forests at higher altitudes to the (questionable) retorts on the coast. The tour belongs on the bucket list for your Tenerife trip because of the overall experience!

Note: In Tenerife, driving on the official hiking routes is prohibited. The. However, the ban is consistently ignored by local mountain bikers. It is advisable to avoid the weekends because that is when many locals are out and about. It is the responsibility of each individual to ride this route on a mountain bike, with full awareness of the legal situation.
