Teide Nationalpark

Teide Nationalpark (Teneriffa)

Biking is strictly prohibited in the Teide National Park. However, riding through on the road is permitted, the scenery is stunning and can be combined with the trail descent to Puerto de la Cruz.

Description

The tour starts in Puerto de la Cruz on the 348 bus, which rides up to El Portillo. The bikes can be stowed in the luggage compartment - ideally, the front wheel should be removed to save space. Thanks to the bus ride, you save 2000 meters of ascent.

From El Portillo, follow the road that rides eastwards through the Teide National Park. It first climbs towards the observatories and then descends slightly. We recommend stopping here regularly to enjoy the view back to the majestic Teide. The landscape at this altitude is impressive and characterized by bizarre lava formations and sweeping views. Finally, you reach a gravel road that branches off to the right to Montaña de la Negrita. This area marks the border of the Teide National Park, where biking is strictly prohibited. However, the following singletrail descent is outside the park. The trail begins technically challenging with tight hairpin bends and becomes increasingly flowy further down. This is how you get down to the Mirador de la Crucita, where you reach the road again.

At the Mirador, the long descent begins on the north side of the ridge via the Camino de la Candelaria. The upper section is technically challenging (S3) and requires good riding technique. Further down, the path becomes smoother before you end up on a gravel road after around 800 Elevation loss. This cycle route runs at a height and crosses the forest towards the striking ridge at Realejo.

Just before you reach the ridge, a marked hiking trail branches off to the right. The start is a little rough, but the trail soon turns into an S1 path that zigzags through dense forests. Occasionally there are short, steep counter-climbs that require some strength before you reach Realejo on fun trails. From there, you can enjoy a relaxed ride back to Puerto de la Cruz on small roads.

Note: In Tenerife, driving on the official hiking routes is prohibited. The. However, the ban is consistently ignored by local mountain bikers. It is advisable to avoid the weekends because that is when many locals are out and about. It is the responsibility of each individual to ride this route on a mountain bike, with full awareness of the legal situation.
