Birstal-Umrundung

Basel

The Birstal to the south of Basel is a densely populated region, but it also provides a good base for bike tours. The Birstal route takes you around the region from Basel and rides back along the banks of the river.

Description

From Basel station, ride through the southern quarter in the direction of Münchenstein. After a large intersection, the streetcar to the Bruderholz district branches off to the left, immediately after which the bike route also branches off to the left and rides along short sections of trail to Klosterfiechten. The route continues southwards along the edge of the forest to Schwabenlos and finally to the Froloo high-voltage switchgear. The tour continues on forest roads to Moosholz and finally over agricultural land to the foot of the Blaueberg. Below the Frohberg and Schalberg ruins, you then reach the Münchsberg ruins and follow a trail to the castle. Over the ridge of the Eichberg  you ride to Aesch and from there to the banks of the Birs. As far as the bridge at Dornachbrugg, the route continues on the right bank of the river through industrial areas until you reach St. Jakob's Park just outside Basel, mainly on single trails. The Veloland route then leads back to the main railway station.
