Gempen-Plateau

The Gempen is a mountain bike gem in Basel. With its many single trails, the local mountain is a very popular mountain bike destination.

Description

From St. Jakob's Park in Basel, you initially follow the River Birs to Angestei Castle near Aesch. Here the ascent begins past Duggingen and the Falkeflue, through the Eichenberg up to Nättenberg on the Gempen plateau. This is where the phenomenal trail starts along the Bürenflue to the village of Gempen. Passing Wolfenried, Schönmatt and Renggersmatt, the route climbs up to Hinetre Ebende between Arlesheim and Münchenstein. This is where the excellent descent to Münschenstein begins, from where you follow the Birs back to St. Jakob's Park.

Alternatives: Instead of taking the rear plain to Münchenstein, take the Gempen Trail, which was specially created for mountain bikers. This starts in the Winterhalle area and rides almost directly to St. Jakob's Park.

Nice tour, the downhill is currently (March 2021) not yet cleared, so there is some undergrowth and trees in the way. The Arlesheim Trail (https://www.trailnet.ch/bta/) is recommended as an alternative downhill route. At an altitude of 600 meters, keep a little to the left and you will reach the start. Usually impossible to miss, as there are always a few bikers cycling to the starting point.

Nice tour, also because of the view, but the rating of 4 for riding technique is definitely not correct, it's more like 2-3... especially the Bürenfluhgrat ridge is a pleasant ripple.
It's worth taking the Arlesheim Trail with you, so you still get some downhill fun.

It's my local mountain, but it never gets boring, especially on this tour...;-)
