Capo Vita

Monte Capannello (Elba)

The northern tip of Elba is relatively unknown, but it has plenty of trails to offer. Here you’ll find some amazing MTB riding away from the crowds. An optional stop: the picturesque Laghetto delle Conche.

Description

From picturesque Rio Marina, follow the road up to Rio nell'Elba and continue on to the La Planche Pass, where the road would ride toward the north coast. Instead, keep to the right and climb up a gravel path to the secondary summit of Monte Capannello. The view from here of the north coast and the entire eastern part of Elba is outstanding. From the summit, the route then descends on a somewhat slippery S2 trail to Passo del Croce and continues on the eastern side of the mountain slope along a trail through open meadow terrain. Here the trail climbs slightly again, but the ascent is easily rideable. Finally, after a short gravel section, you reach the Aia di Cacio Pass and thus the next single-track descent. The varied S2 trail joins an asphalt road far below, which you follow for a few meters before turning left and switching back to climbing mode. The road rides up to Monte Grosso, but you skip the entire climb and instead, after 120 meters of elevation gain, turn right onto a descent along a wide trail down to Colle a Vita. Then it’s uphill again for a short stretch, this time 60 meters of elevation gain around Il Serrone. The descent begins on a narrow road but soon turns into a trail. This trail hugs the northernmost tip of Elba and finally ends at the first houses of Cavo.

Now comes the return trip to Rio Marina. To do this, you ride south on the road, but then turn right onto a gravel road at the mining sites. You ride up this road and make a short detour to the Laghetto delle Conche. This artificial mining lake is now a true natural spectacle thanks to its red water. From the lake, take the same path back to the large mine, where you then climb up a gravel road until you reach a paved road. Ride south on this road for a short while until a path branches off to the left. This soon turns out to be an uphill trail. Experienced e-mountain bikers can ride the 70-meter climb; everyone else will have to push their bikes on this section. But the effort is worth it! This is where the Dragut Trail begins, a truly fun and varied ride rated S2. It leads down to the coastal road and serves as the crowning finale of this tour, before you roll the last few meters back to Rio Marina along the coastal road.
