Monte Fonza
Description
From Lacona, you first pedal up the road to Passo del Monumento, where you turn right onto a bumpy gravel road. The route starts with an uphill section, followed by a short descent, before a final climb leads to the point where the “Costa del Guardarone” trail branches off to the left. This well-known trail leads down into the region around Marina di Campo. While the upper section is extremely smooth to ride, the path further down is a bit rougher. The trail descends almost to the pass road connecting Marina di Campo and Procchio. You finally reach the coastal region via a narrow trail along the airfield.
In Marina di Campo, the second part of the tour begins with the ascent to Monte Fonza. For those choosing the direct route via the south side, an e-mountain bike is highly recommended, as the second section of the gravel road up to the ridge is extremely rough. Without motor assistance, this climb proves to be a major challenge. In this case, it’s better to take the road up to Passo del Monumento and reach the ridge via the well-maintained gravel road on the north side. Monte Fonza is, however, undeniably worth the effort. This is due in part to the magnificent coastal panorama at the summit, and in part to the first-class single-track descent. The downhill trail requires S2-level riding skills almost throughout. At the very end, there are a few short climbs to tackle before covering the last few meters back to civilization on a bumpy track.
