Massa alla Guata

Massa alla Guata (Elba)

Below Monte Perrone, the locals on Elba have created a first-class trail network.

Description

From the traffic circle in Marina di Campo, ride to the beach promenade and follow it in a north-easterly direction. Follow Via Chiuso Torto and Via Pian di Mezzo until you reach the VIa Madoninna and climb up to the mountain village of Sant'Illario in gentle hairpin bends with great views. Continue along the tarred road until the road to Monte Perone branches off. The road now becomes a little steeper and climbs for around 400 meters in several hairpin bends. In a bend to the right, a small uphill trail branches off to the left, which you follow over a few ramps to the start of a wider forest path. Several trails branch off here, which also allow for shorter variants. We follow the turn-off to the right uphill, which winds its way up to the ridge and the Massa alla Guata viewpoint below the rocky peak of Le Calanche. Up here there is an old, dilapidated lookout tower that offers a fantastic view of the sea and the bay of Marina di Campo. You can even see Corsica and almost all the islands of the Tuscan archipelago from up here: Pianosa, Giglio, Montecristo and Giannutri.

Now comes the first trail highlight: you follow the narrow path southwards through colorful ferns. Roots, small steps, tight bends and great granite passages offer a lot of enduro fun at S2 to S3 level until you reach a forest path, which you follow uphill again to the familiar junction. Now turn right onto the trail signposted "Zucca 2", which offers a real rollercoaster feeling with small jumps and berms, until it spits us out again further down on a forest path, which we follow to the right. From here, it is best to follow the black signs for "Massa alla Guata", which ride westwards over two more long trails with wonderful sections over granite rocks with a good grip down to the seaside resort of Cavoli and Seccheto. From there, you roll back along the coastal road to Marina di Campo with a short climb in the opposite direction.

Great descent and views / colors, but it seems like the bike park here isn’t being maintained anymore. Some of the jumps look a bit on the verge of collapsing, and the washed-out sections obviously aren’t going to fix themselves. But good riders aren’t going to let the ruts stop them. It’s not steep, so you can ride it all at a leisurely pace. The uphill section after the road has been heavily dug up, presumably by wild boars, and was only partially rideable for me. We lost the trail with the Massa alla Guarta signs at one point and took a small right turn instead. But then, before the sign for Cave, we turned left onto a short stretch of overgrown trail. Then we were back on the track. All in all, a worthwhile ride, though it took us a bit longer than the numbers suggested.

A real highlight! It alternates between brilliant trails and sections that have unfortunately been washed out and are now partly unrideable.

Were out and about in Bikeland Elba Ovest. Definitely worth a visit! The Italians also held the enduro championships here this year.
Could even be shuttled if you have a car with enough loading space. No off-roader necessary.
