Valle Literno

Valle Literno

Short jaunt on Elba through the Valle Literno with a flowing macchia trail and plenty of island feeling

Description

From the small village of Colle di Procchio, first on tar, then on a good cart track through Valle Literno until you reach the ridge road between Passo di Monumento and Monte San Martino. Follow this road to the left and leave the first trail junction on the left. Leave the steep section that soon follows on the left and follow the now wide trail through the forest until you reach the wide cart track again. Here the trail branches off back to Colle di Procchio and disappears into the maquis. In a few hairpin bends and extremely flowy at S1 level with only a few more technical S2 passages, the trail runs below the Costa del Gualdarone down into the valley. Here and there, a beautiful view over the hilly landscape to the sea in the south awaits. Once at the bottom, you ride back to the starting point on small tarred roads.

Alternatively, the tour can also be started from Marina di Campo and ridden over the Passo di Monumento to the start of the trail and back on the road.

I’m certainly no enduro world champion ;-) But I was still able to ride most of the descent. Choosing the right line is key here. I didn’t find it that difficult; it was definitely fun and absolutely worth it. The climb is very manageable—first a short stretch of road, then a gentle trail. Can be combined with the Napoleon Loop; see the comment there.

The trail itself is awesome, but in some places it's so washed out that it's barely rideable—not much S1, more like S2.

The lower part is - like all the Narurtrails on Elba - quite washed out.
In the upper part S2, below rather S2+.
Be careful in the rain, the otherwise rock-hard, solid dirt turns to soft soap!
