Elba Coast to Coast

Massa alla Quata (Elba)

The island of Elba is quite narrow, making for great MTB routes from one coast to the other. This route connects the south and north coasts with challenging downhill trails.

Description

The tour consists of two loops, both of which can be ridden separately. However, it is the combination of the two that gives this route its special appeal. The starting point is Marina di Campo, from where you pedal up 640 meters of elevation gain along a narrow road to Valico Monte Perone, the pass leading over to the north side. Now it’s time to roll downhill for a short stretch on the paved road until the trail branches off to the right, leading virtually non-stop down to Marciana. The varied S2 trail is sometimes fast, sometimes a bit rougher. Occasionally, wild boars have also dug up the path a bit here. This brings you to the Madonna del Buonconsiglio, where the character of the trail changes fundamentally. Here you head onto an old trail that is no longer actively maintained but is excellently laid out. Since it is no longer maintained, there are a few rougher sections here. But the more the trail is ridden, the better it gets. If every mountain biker clears a few loose stones out of the way while riding, that’s already half the battle won for uninterrupted riding fun. The trail eventually leads down to Marciana Marina, a picturesque village on the north coast.

For the second part of the tour, you first climb up the main road to Poggio and from there continue up a small road to the Valico Monte Perone, the pass you already know from the first loop. You ride downhill for a bit and then turn right onto a trail leading up to Masso alla Quata. The first few meters are still a bit bumpy, but after that, the path is smooth and rideable all the way up to the scenic outcrop. On an e-mountain bike, this is effortless; without motor assistance, however, the climb requires quite a bit of leg strength. From Masso alla Quata, there’s a fantastic view over almost the entire south coast. But above all, this is where the first-class single-track descent begins. The trail, marked as “Zucca 2,” creates a real roller-coaster feeling with small jumps and banked turns until it joins a forest road further down, which you follow to the right. From here, it’s best to follow the black “Massa alla Guata” signs, which lead westward down two more long trails with great sections on grippy granite rock toward the beach towns of Cavoli and Seccheto. From there, a short climb back up the coastal road takes you on a relaxed ride back to Marina di Campo.
