Marciana Rockgarden (Neviera-Trail)
Description
The tour starts in the picturesque village of Sant’Andrea in the northwest of Elba. You first climb up to the main road and follow it to Marciana. Here, the surface changes from asphalt to gravel as you continue climbing until the gravel road winds its way up the mountain for a short stretch. Suddenly, a trail branches off to the right, gaining 90 meters in elevation. Those riding an e-mountain bike can tackle this section by riding. Without motor assistance, however, pushing is the order of the day.
Finally, you reach the Neviera Trail. The name comes from the deep holes in the ground along the route, where winter snow was once stored to be used for cooling in the hospital during the summer. For mountain bikers, however, the present is what matters: The trail presents a technical challenge, is rated S3 throughout, and features numerous S4 sections. You’ll be navigating a demanding rock garden for an extended period. This section is fascinating but requires solid fitness and even better riding technique. Those tackling the passage on an e-mountain bike benefit from a higher base speed and can power up the numerous steps with ease. Eventually, you delve deeper and deeper into the forest, where the route becomes increasingly smooth.
This leads you to an asphalt road, where you climb another 90 meters in elevation until the continuation of the single-track descent begins on the left. The trail now leads down to the coastal town of Marciana Marina. Those wishing to shorten the tour need only ride to the second intersection of the paved road and follow it with significantly less effort to Poggio. Those who ride on to Madonna del Buonconsiglio and down to the coast will instead take an old, no longer actively maintained, but excellently laid-out trail under their wheels. Since it is no longer maintained, there are a few rougher sections here. But the more often the trail is ridden, the better it gets. If every mountain biker clears a few loose stones out of the way while riding, that’s already half the battle won for unspoiled riding fun. The trail eventually leads down to Marciana Marina, a picturesque village on the north coast.
Here, it’s time to gather your strength for the climb up the road to Poggio and from there up a bumpy gravel road to a private chapel. After a short descent and a steep ramp, you finally reach the spot where the Neviera Trail once began. This is now the starting point for the exhilarating final stretch back to Sant’Andrea. You follow the gravel path for a bit, just as on the ascent, but then turn onto the S2 to S3 trails above Marciana. These varied trails lead high above the northwest coast back to the finish.
