Monte Calamita Supertrails

Minenanlagen am Monte Calamita (Elba)

The southern tip of Elba is the island’s MTB hotspot. The headland is crisscrossed with smooth singletrack trails, some of which wind through former mining sites.

Description

The mountain bike tour starts in Capoliveri with a “cold start.” The paved climb up to the first singletrack is extremely steep. However, the paved road soon turns into a gravel road until, on the right-hand side, a superbly maintained singletrack branches off, leading smoothly to a road situated slightly lower down. The route follows this road for a few meters before the trail continues and leads directly down to the sea.

Now the route heads uphill for a short stretch on a narrow road.

On the right, a smooth-riding trail branches off, riding past the well-known ruins of the mining sites. These have become classic photo subjects for photographers on Elba.

The rest of the mountain bike tour is difficult to describe in simple terms, as the network of paths here resembles a dense web of trails. The route is designed so that you repeatedly have to tackle short climbs to reach the start of the next trail. All trails fall within the S1 and S2 difficulty levels, while some high-altitude trails are also rated S0. An absolute highlight are the trails in the mining area with its characteristic red soil. Here, several first-class super trails have been perfectly integrated into the terrain.

The most technically demanding section of the mountain bike tour is the loop near Ripalte. The trail high above the cliffs offers an impressive panorama and an extraordinary backdrop; however, the path is already somewhat overgrown and receives only minimal maintenance.

The mountain bike tour reaches its grand finale on the super trail from Monte Calamita and the subsequent high-altitude trail back toward Capoliveri. To reach this first-class high-altitude trail, you must tackle another short climb, which really takes its toll on your energy reserves as you approach the finish. However, this short ascent fits perfectly into the athletic character of this loop.
