Ciampedie-Trail

Val de Vaiolet (Val di Fassa)

The descent from Ciampedie in Val di Fassa is a trail classic par excellence, but is also popular with hikers due to the mountain railroad (without bike transport). The tour with the ascent through the Val de Vaiolet is a great mountain bike route at off-peak times or, even better, outside of cable car operating hours.

Description

Pozza di Fassa is the base of the tour up to Ciampedie. Initially you roll along the main road over to the neighboring village of Pera and then climb up to Monzon at the entrance to the Val de Vailoet. You gain altitude on gravel roads (steep as usual in the region) and reach the Rifugio Gardeccia. Now change sides of the valley and climb up to Ciampedie at a more moderate gradient. It is worth taking a break every now and then to enjoy the view into the wild Val de Vaiolet and the Rosengarten massif behind it. The Ciampedie is usually quite busy, as a cable car runs up here and pushes hikers up in droves. For this reason, it is advisable to tackle the tour in the off-season and at off-peak times, especially as a good number of the day-trippers have the same destination as us: the single trail down to Pozza.

We bypass the first part of the descent on a gravel road alongside a ski lift, but then keep right and reach the downhill trail this way. This is hard to beat in terms of variety. Sometimes fast and flowing, then again challenging and tricky; sometimes rooty, sometimes rocky, then again slick earth; sometimes dead straight, then again interspersed with tight hairpin bends. Here you will find everything a mountain biker's heart desires - provided you have a solid riding technique. The trail rides in this manner all the way down to Pozza.

Very nice trail - but only possible off-season when the cable car is not shuttling hundreds of hikers up.
The ascent is crisp but fast - the descent is very steep at the top and bottom with hairpin bends - super easy to ride in between
