Margelchopf

Margelchopf (Buchs SG)

The Margelchopf high above Buchs is one of the more beautiful panoramic mountains in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and a good mountain bike destination. However, the ascent to the summit is only possible on foot.

Description

The ascent from Buchs up to Margelchopf is quickly explained: 1300 vertical meters on an asphalt road, 140 vertical meters on a gravel road, 200 vertical meters on a single trail, 80 vertical meters on a rocky path. A total of 1720 vertical meters in one go. That's a steep climb. If you want to make the ascent easier, organize a lift to Berghaus Malbun and save yourself 900 metres in altitude. The ascent leads up to Alp Obersäss on an asphalt road, then the surface changes and you climb up a section of forest road until the path turns into a singletrail. Here the bike has to be pushed again and again, then you can ride for a short distance before having to push it up again on foot. In this style you reach the rocks below the summit of the Margelchopf. The bike must be deposited here, the final section is only possible on foot. The path is steep, exposed and secured with a fixed rope in places. However, the climb is worth it, as the view from the summit of the Rhine Valley, Vorarlberg and Toggenburg with the Säntis is phenomenal.

Back on the bike, you get into the saddle and head back to Alp Obersäss via the singletrail. The entire descent leads largely along the ascent road and primarily comprises singletrails, which are generally very smooth to ride. You surf down the entire Buchserberg, with the trail only ending on the outskirts of Buchs.

I only rode as far as just before the Isizergrat (near the Seeli). There was still a large snowfield on the ridge. The tour description is 100% correct. I rode with my e-bike. Some parts you have to get the bike up somehow, but it works and it's not always very long... The descent is great, even if not everything was rideable for me in the top section.

I can only confirm the tour description and the comments so far: top!

Cycled the tour on 09.09.2023. It was a great tour with downhill technique and flow. I can only recommend it.

I rode the tour on 02.07.2023. The ascent is easy to do. The downhill is great; everything from technical to flowy. On the way down, it's worth leaving the recorded tour every now and then and riding by the nose.

A wonderful tour and very rewarding!
The ascent is quite long, but easily manageable on the asphalt. After that it gets a bit tough, but the end is foreseeable. The descent is really great and flowing and is almost exclusively on trails, especially as far as Buchs.
A favorite tour in the Rhine Valley!
