Liechtensteiner Höhenweg
Description
An ideal starting point for this tour is Landquart. From here, take the train to Buchs in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, then roll across the Rhine to Vaduz, where you change to the bus in the direction of Malbun. You get off in the village of Steg, just after the tunnel.
After the bus stop, you can start by rolling along a small road - almost flat at first, but later mercilessly steep up to the Pfälzerhütte. If you are traveling without a motor, you will particularly appreciate the refreshment stop at the hut. Above the hut, there is a pushing section along the ridge. Now you are on the Liechtensteiner Höhenweg, which soon becomes flatter and is rideable again in sections. E-mountain bikers in particular benefit significantly here and can master many passages by pedaling. Nevertheless, there are always short sections of pushing. If you want to ride as much as possible, you need a clean, safe riding technique.
This is how you reach the hill below the Bartümeljoch and thus the third section of the ascent. The goal is the Hochjoch. The path up is partly rideable with a powerful e-bike, and the push assist is used in places. Without a motor, you will mostly have to push, but the path is well developed. Please note: between the Pfälzerhütte and the Hochjoch, you are in Vorarlberg and therefore in Austrian territory.
At the Hochjoch, an impressive view of the Rätikon and the Schesaplana opposite opens up. The trail now lies ahead of you, riding along the foot of the mighty rock faces over to the Schesaplana hut. This section is mainly in the S3 range, is often easy to ride, but also has its pitfalls - individual S4 sections should not be underestimated. Shortly before the hut, there is an unrideable section of rock to negotiate; caution is advised here, especially with heavy e-mountainbikes.
After the refreshment stop, the descent follows: initially flowing, later much more technical, the trail ends on a forest road that rides down to Seewis. Due to the lack of direct trail options, you roll along this road into the village and then switch to the flowing trails towards Grüsch, a worthy conclusion to this extraordinary, sometimes adventurous alpine tour.
Finally, you return to Landquart in a relaxed manner on the country road through the Klus.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
