Massa Marittima Klassiker-Tour
Description
From the traffic circle below the hill on which Massa Marittima is located, you gain altitude on the side road to Capanne with a pleasant gradient. After a good two kilometers, turn right onto a forest road, which later turns into a cart path and serves as a feeder to the first descent called "Picci's Whoops", continued by "Canyon 2". Another trail takes you to the hamlet of Capanne. Iron ore used to be mined here, which is why the ground is red and yellow in places and forms a beautiful contrast to the green maquis forests.
You then reach the "Santo Subito" trail descent via the "Brenna Uphill" and then follow a small road to the trail ascent called "Sex Uphill". Follow a forest road to the classic trail "Castello Diruto" and then take the partly winding trail towards a small valley and the "Sex-Uphill" again. Once you reach the hill, ride straight ahead onto the Pesta Trail, the next classic trail in the region. At the bottom, bear sharply right and quickly gain height again on a forest road before turning sharply left at the top. You reach the "Show Time" jump trail via easy trails and ride in an alternation of trails and forest roads to the legendary canyon, probably the most famous single trail in the region. This winds its way through a small gorge and offers natural berms to guarantee fun. You return to the starting point via country lanes.

A beautiful ride with plenty of trail sections! But be careful: the Brenna uphill is very overgrown at the top and can only be ridden with great difficulty. I couldn’t find the Santo Subito at all. I searched for the trail for several minutes at the trailhead at the top, finally gave up, and rode back down the Brenna Uphill. A few days later, a local confirmed to me that this trail is no longer in use and is therefore no longer maintained (October 2026). So here’s my recommendation: At the first fork on the gravel road just past Capanne, keep right instead of going straight up; this will take you on a more or less flat gravel path directly to the Sex Uphill and back onto the planned route. This saves you a few meters of elevation gain and, above all, a lot of frustration. Otherwise, it’s a great tour—a cool combination of trails on these hills!
We rode the tour on April 7, 2026. The “Canyon 2” is still closed, but there’s a detour right next to it. A fence has been or is being built in the upper section of the Brenna uphill and at the start of the Santo-Subito, since the house at the top is occupied again. We then looked for another way down.
Tour ridden on 1.11.2024. The "Canyon 2" trail is no longer rideable & closed. Totally washed out with deep gullies from torrents.
The tour is really great, but the fitness level (without the EMtb) is more like 5/6 in my opinion. The Sex-Uphill Trail alone (and the surface anyway; rather soft) requires a lot of power. The loop felt more like 1,500m in the Swiss low mountain range. Make sure you have some reserves for the canyon at the end ;-)
We rode this tour several times in September 2023. This tour is known as "La Pasta Flow". Super cool and varied tour/trails! Absolutely recommendable! The tour can be perfectly combined with a detour to the lake: Lago dell'Accesa. Be sure to pack your swimsuit and jump into the lake! Simply wonderful!
